Day 1: Hello Sochi!!!!

After two long days of travel we have finally arrived in Sochi! We are cozied up in our two bedroom, four person apartment watching the rain.

Our flights were pretty uneventful although very long. The only issue we encountered was when thor almost missed his flight in ottawa The layover in Istanbul was crazy long but we played some cards and took a nap to pass the time. We also managed to meet some fellow Canadians on the flight who are also volunteering at the Olympics.

Once we arrived in Sochi, the real adventure began. We don't speak Russian... We were pretty nervous going through customs but the long months of visa troubles worked out. No problems getting through and all of our bags came. We were surprised at the lack of security at the airport, maybe it was because our flight arrived at four am.  We waited for our Russian contact to arrive and used some much missed WiFi.

When our ride came and we headed outside, we were greeted with the Olympic rings and our first (of I'm sure many) rainy morning. We got to our apartment pretty quickly, which makes sense considering we were traveling with a wannabe race cardriver going 140km\h.  We were happy to arrive at the apartment and get some much needed rest. We unpacked a little and decided who would be sleeping where and then crashed. Our planned two hour nap turned into four and no one had any complaints about that!

We then went for a drive around Sochi and to Olympic park. Except for the volunteers in their Sochi jackets, there isn't a noticeable Olympic buzz. Hopefully that will start to pickup closer to the opening ceremonies. We did some grocery shopping and bought some much needed food and are now back at the apartment waiting to see what happens next. We were invited by our hosts to go to a "show" tonight. Although we still don't know hat he means for sure. The adventure continues ...
